My Approach

Relational

I like to work relationally because it's real, alive, happening now and relates to the effects of relationships that have formed us. It is also where we get to work through new possibilities in ourselves with the other. They say what has formed in relationship needs relationship to heal, so forming safe kind loving connection can be very reparative.

Parts

As children we develop coping mechanisms to enable us to survive difficulty. These then can form parts of our character that we habitually employ whether situations warrant it or not. They formed for really good reasons - they really did help us survive - but we often develop difficult relationships with these parts of ourselves, judging, dismissing, feeling shame, even hating them. This conflict can make life hard, with layers of feelings, beliefs, behaviours, fears and compensations that fundamentally are closed loops and self perpetuating.

I love to help break this cycle, to value, respect and welcome with understanding those parts of us that are still desperately trying to help us, working collaboratively rather than in opposition.

Coping mechanisms help protect the most hurt places in us, when they let us in we can feel what is calling to be felt and finally connected with.

Curiosity, Intent, Trust

In all of this I value curiosity as a powerful ally that can unseat judgement and create a softer kinder environment. I also trust something at the core of us I would call psyche, that seems to know how to heal if given the right conditions. It might sound woo woo but it's not given me any cause to doubt it yet. I find our intent is another piece of this positive spiral as it seems to aid conscious and unconscious cohesive movement towards what is longed for in the psyche, only some of which we consciously need to do.

Whole body, Expression, Energy.

I love the freedom to work in ways that are helpful that aren't just talking. We are a whole being and engaging different aspects of ourselves feels appropriate if we are looking to integrate and reclaim parts of ourselves. Having had years of body psychotherapy I work with the whole body supporting movement, expression, connection with what's happening, allowing the energy of feeling to be felt and engaged with.

Wild therapy, Ritual, Symbolic, Sand tray, Art

Working in nature and creating individual rituals can enrich and hold the therapeutic work in often surprising ways. I love working organically and picking up the brave gauntlet that opens to this, sometimes called working with the transpersonal, trusting the larger than ourselves. I offer sand tray, art and play ways of working to allow processes to take the floor more directly.
